Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller shaped the rock and roll era - this is their story in their own words.
In 1950 a couple of rhythm and blues loving teenagers named Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller met for the first time. Leiber was looking for someone to help compose music for lyrics he'd written, and a friend recommended a Piano player named Mike Stoller. They discovered their mutual affection for R&B, and, as Jerry and Mike put it in this fascinating autobiography, it was the beginning of an argument that has been going on for more than fifty years with no resolution in sight.
With the assistance of David Ritz, they describe what it was like when Elvis was a fresh new face and when two young guys with tons of talent and an insatiable love of good old American R&B could create the soundtrack for a generation - and have a great time doing it.
Jerry Leiber was born in Baltimore, Maryland on April 25th 1933, and Mike Stoller was born in Queens, New York on March 13th 1933. They first met in Los Angeles in 1950, moved to New York in 1957 and returned to L.A. in 1989, where they both still reside. They were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1985 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.

Being an Elvis fan even as a child I noticed the names Leiber & Stollerand wondered who they were. When I got older, and started listening to groups like the Drifters, and the Coasters, I saw them as writers and Producers and loved the sounds the were getting.
This is an easy read, where Jerry and Mike trade stories back and forth almost in a diary style.
I learned a few things I didn't know, and confirmed a few things I suspected, like the fact that Phil Specter pretty much got his whole production style from these guys and called it his own.
I recomend it for music fans who are more interested in the behind the scenes stuff, and the real lives of two of America's greatest writers, and producers.

Hound Dog The Leiber and Stoller Autobiography eBook David Ritz Jerry Leiber Mike Stoller Reviews
I refuse to believe that McCartney and Lennon had more hits than Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller.
This is a very entertaining read, by two gifted writers. I was amazed at all of the songs that they wrote, not to mention the songs that they produced. They wrote songs that were R&B Hits that most white americans of the era (50s and 60s) never heard. ("Idol with a Golden Head" is an example). In an era when most AM stations did not play songs by R&B artists, two white jewish boys wrote some of the best R&B songs ever. And here they tell you about it Very Good read.
A lot of fun to read. Great stories about the birth of rock and roll from rock and roll icons. The first 2/3 were fascinating and the last 1/3 a little slow so it loses one star
I thoroughly enjoy the music of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, especially from the 1950s with the Coasters and into the 1960 with The Drifters and the girl groups. Little did they know at the time that their music would become timeless. It did take me some time to get used to the format of the book. I've never read a book that goes back and forth with each individual taking turns speaking. I had to remind myself as to who was speaking as I read through the book. The book is a quick read with the part dealing with the post 1960s not as interesting to me. This is also the story of other great songwriting teams from the 1960s such as Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich, Carole King and Gerry Goffin, and Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil from the days of The Brill Building. Hound Dog was to be sung by Big Mama Thornton, but it was an unknown named Elvis Presley who made it a hit. Leiber and Stoller did make it big with Smokey Joe's Cafe to top off their career. Their personal lives suffered throughout their careers as such a lifestyle would suggest. I found the book interesting, but I would strongly suggest you check out a DVD set entitled The Songmakers which is sold here on . It contains two DVDs of music from their era. In part it includes "The Hitmakers-The Teens Who Stole Pop Music" and "Words and Music by Leiber & Stoller." Both will provide you with an excellent presentation of the role of Leiber and Stoller in American music. This is an outstanding set. Check it out! You can thank me later.
This "autobiography" written by TWO individuals is more like a transciption of a conversation. It took a little getting used to in the beginning--keeping the characters straight--but in a short while it was like listening to two men (alta cockers) tell the story of their lives. The book was written in 2009 with Jerry Leiber telling us at that time (at the end of the book) that his heart was about to fail after many medical procedures.
Even though it was 300 pages long, it was some of the fastest reading I'd ever done, as the two composers seemed to just enjoy life without getting too serious. The one aspect of their work that sticks with me is how fast they wrote songs, sometime as quick as 15 minutes. It reminded me of the Lennon-McCartney collaboration, which I just read about. Also, unless you are well-versed in their music, I'd suggest reading this with an iPad so you can Google the songs.
This is one of my favorite books. I love how the book is structured on a time line with Jerry making his comments about what he was doing (or not doing) and then Mike making his comments about what he was doing (or not doing) all interwoven as time marched along. And I was transported back in time as they shared about how the music was made (or was not made). These guys were constantly breaking new ground and creating a new industry which never existed before. I was constantly entertained and informed as I eagerly read about their lives. As the saying goes, I would have loved to share a beer (or cocktail) with either (or both) of these gentlemen. A great read, a great period in history to learn about, and a book you will not want to put down or end.
Absolutely wonderful ! I'm so grateful to Mr. Leiber and Mr. Stoller for doing what they did with absolute artistic integrity all their lives ! They never wavered from their vision - which was vast, and their blues roots. They were driven to learn sophisticated musicality at such a young age, and honed their craft all along the way. Thanks for the wonderful songs guys ( yes, songs - not product ! ) I believe the first song by Leiber and Stoller I heard was Charlie Brown, on my sister's radio. I believe I was 5 yrs. old. Today there is nothing I would rather do (except being in the house of God,) than to talk shop with such musical greats. Alas, tis but a dream ... But I digress. The reader will find a historic insight into the who's who of the music industry. L&S knew and worked closely with Everybody ! And, a roller-coaster ride into the often crazy evolution of SO many classic songs, the inside workings of the Brill Building, and so much more. It will thoroughly entertain and keep you reading till the wee hours. Get yourself a copy and enjoy !
